SmartTHING windows executables and virus checkers...

There is a possibility that virus checkers, anti-malware or anti-virus programs show a false positive notice saying that SmartPASTE, SmartSOCIAL, SmartZIP, SmartOUTLOOK or SmartGMAIL are a possible virus or trojan. They may also block functionality of the products making them only seem to partially work.

These products (as well as some of our other products) use the same technology (AutoItV3 - https://www.autoitscript.com/) which controls Microsoft Windows allowing us to switch between programs, send key presses etc. It is not a virus or malware but due to the automated tasks it is doing, it could be misconstrued as a virus's may replicate a similar process.

You can though in ALL virus checkers white list programs. That is what needs to happen with SmartPASTE, SmartSOCIAL, SmartZIP, SmartOUTLOOK and SmartGMAIL.

Solution

Given below are steps that fix the issue. We still suggest you to white list the product but sometimes this solves the issue without doing that:

1.    Ensure that the product is installed within C:/Program Files (x86)/SmartTHING folder (i.e. smartgmail.exe or smartoutlook.exe should be placed in this folder). Some virus checkers trust applications within Program Files rather than another directory such as 'Downloads'.

The programs now come with an installer which ensures they are put in the correct location, you can use this or manually move the program:
            2.   If you did not use an installer: Ensure that the product is Unblocked. You can do this by, right clicking on application .exe file, clicking on 'Properties', then click the 'Unblock' button if it is present, otherwise close properties.

            3.   Run the program once from the Program Files folder so it installs itself to run with windows correctly

            4.   Reboot your PC - the program should automatically start with windows and appear in the bottom right.

Peace of mind

You have chosen to download these programmes from us, in doing so you know where they came from and you would expect them to be virus free.

However, you don't have to accept our word for it: You can scan the programs using this free online checker which runs them through loads of different common virus checkers, we do this to check them ourselves:

We note that there are, because of the reasons above, three virus notifications in this (last tested 20 Jun 2016):

Bkav: W32.HfsAtITA.815A 20160620
ClamAV: Win.Trojan.8760521-1 20160620
Qihoo-360: QVM11.1.Malware.Gen 20160620

all the other virus checkers show the files as OK. The files are virus free if this is the result shown.
